Beauty made living

Beauty made living

At the foot of the Papal Palace, La Mirande offers one of Avignon’s most precious

addresses. Behind the façade of this 18th-century mansion, time does not stand

still; it simply takes on a different quality. The terrace and gardens, the tall windows,

the wood-panelled salons, the tapestries and master paintings create a place that

feels deeply lived in, where history is present at every turn without ever becoming

static.

Staying at La Mirande is like stepping through two centuries of French decorative

arts at their most vibrant. The rooms and suite, conceived in the spirit of the 18th

century, combine printed cottons and Toile de Jouy fabrics, silks, antique furniture,

engravings and original parquet floors with remarkable delicacy. The Belle Époque

bathrooms, crafted in Carrara marble and fitted with Edwardian-style fixtures,

extend this understated elegance. Most windows frame majestic views of the

Papal Palace, while others overlook the rooftops of Avignon.

Since January, Michele Donvito has brought the same pursuit of authenticity and

precision to the kitchen. His interpretation of Provence is refined, sensitive and

profoundly guided by the quality of the ingredients. Freshly pressed olive oil,

wild herbs from the limestone plateaus, fish from the Mediterranean coast and

vegetables sourced from the market halls inspire menus offered in three, five

or seven courses. Here, flavour unfolds with restraint and confidence, free from

unnecessary embellishment, achieving a rare sense of natural elegance.

Beneath the hotel, La Table Haute, set within the former medieval kitchen, reveals

another side of the house: a long communal table, open flames, dishes passed from

hand to hand and conversations that arise effortlessly. A single night, a leisurely

lunch beneath the foliage or a dinner by the fireplace is enough to understand

what makes La Mirande so distinctive: here, beauty is never merely decorative. It

becomes presence, gentleness and memory.
