his place feels like the most perfect of outdoor movie sets.
"e pays d’Apt stretches for about 30 kilometres, with
the Luberon mountains to the south and the slopes of the
Vaucluse mountains to the north …
From east to west, the landscape is lovely, sheltered from the
mistral wind and brimming with vines, orchards, ochre-
coloured earth, and dry stone. Our destination covers almost
three hectares; the grounds are filled with the noble vestiges of
the skilled work of yesteryear’s builders.
Everywhere you look, there’s an abundance of decorative pieces,
and they’re all beautiful, thanks to time’s inimitable way of
mellowing colours. Here, two hundred years’ worth of sun and
cold weather have painted the exteriors with pale honey and light
grey, colours you can bring to your own house to start your very
own story. Over there are stone troughs and lavoirs (traditional
communal laundry basins) rubbing shoulders with aged chimneys
in white or straw-gold stone; benches and fountains carved out
of Luberon stone are found amongst pillars, decorative pieces,
roofing beams, flagstones, and ancient terracotta..
“Since 1965 we’ve been working as a family. At the beginning,
we had to go out and find things, and really explore what was
out there in terms of old material. And then we developed a
new way of operating, consisting of remodeling things to adapt
to the demands of modern-day building sites. For example, it’s
impossible for them to use flagstones at the thickness they were
sized to 200 years ago,” Caroline Chabaud recalls.
"e company, co-managed with her brother Sébastien, has
continued along this trajectory, offering consulting services, and
then the re-working of basins, fountains, chimneys, flagstones,
pillars and even terracotta. It proposes a precious je ne sais quoi
for the most modest of homes to the most splendid. What’s not to
love for the customer who’s a fan of the full cinematic effect!
