!e soul of Provence,
stone by stone
In the heart of the Luberon, at the gateway to Apt, Les Matériaux
Anciens Jean Chabaud has been cultivating a rare art for more
than sixty years: giving a second life to the treasures of our archi-
tectural heritage. Founded in 1963 by Jean Chabaud, the family
business is now led by Sébastien and Caroline Chabaud, brother
and sister, passionate heirs to a savoir-faire that combines a
deep respect for tradition with a resolutely contemporary vision.
Spread across nearly three hectares of open-air displays, com-
plemented by indoor showrooms and workshops, lies one of
France’s largest collections of reclaimed architectural materials.
Time-worn roof tiles, terracotta floor tiles and antique terracot-
ta, beams and wooden flooring, stone slabs and cobblestones,
character fireplaces, entrance pillars, basins, fountains, cement
tiles and wrought-iron gates — each piece tells a story, ready to
find a new home while preserving the nobility of the years that
shaped it.
The soul of the company also resides in its stone-carving
workshops, where skilled stonemasons craft bespoke archi-
tectural elements from reclaimed stone or newly aged stone.
Cleaning and restoring timber, recreating antique stone and ter-
racotta flooring, and producing custom-made architectural fea-
tures are all part of the Chabaud expertise. Their craftsmanship
supports architects, landscape designers, interior designers and
private clients in their most demanding projects, both in France
and abroad.
True to its heritage-driven vocation, the company prioritises
reuse and local sourcing, with new arrivals coming almost daily
from demolition specialists and private owners throughout the
region. A second site, located in Maillane, just a few minutes
from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, extends the experience into the
heart of the Alpilles.
At Jean Chabaud, preserving heritage is not merely a philosophy;
it is a lasting commitment — a way of building the future with the
finest materials of the past.
